Description

The 1962 season was a tough one for the New York Mets, who finished with a dismal record of 40-120. This left manager Casey Stengel scratching his wizened head while wondering "can't anybody here play this game?" The Mets inaugural season woes also prompted Hall of Fame centerfielder Richie Ashburn to head to the broadcasting booth rather than face another year so far down in the dumps. Still New York City fans were tremendously excited to see the return of National League baseball to the "Big Apple".

Verging on the sixty year anniversary of this historically inept first season, we present an extremely rare 1962 Mets team photo set, with original cover letter and mailer, along with a 1962 Mets yearbook. These very nicely preserved items should be of great interest to diehard fans and baseball historians in general.

Given the '62 Mets roster, it's no surprise that the coaches provide the highest interest among the photo set, which numbers (24). Despite slight curling on the perimeter, these classic 4x5 photos are very appealing in ranging (VG-EX to EX-MT+) with excellent gloss, clean surfaces and distinct images. Featured are: Rogers Hornsby (coach, HOF), "Red" Ruffing (coach, HOF), Rich Ashburn (HOF), Gil Hodges, "Cookie" Lavagetto (coach), "Red" Kress (coach), Elio Chacon, "Choo Choo" Coleman, Felix Mantilla, Roger Craig, Chris Cannizzaro, Al Jackson, "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry, Rod Kanehl, Ken MacKenzie, Jay Hook, Bob Moorhead, Ray Daviault, Sherman Jones, Bill Hunter, Craig Anderson, Bob Miller, Joe Christopher and Sammy Taylor.

Accompanying are the original cover letter dated 10/29/62 from Casey Stengel's secretary, on "Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc." letterhead and the original mailer with a metered Mets postage label, also dated 10/29/62. The letter mentions the photo set being sent to a married couple in Rockford, Illinois, to help with a Christmas Bazaar at St. Peter's School.

Also present is a 1962 Mets yearbook (EX-MT) with a classic baby illustration by celebrated sports cartoonist Willard Mullin.
