Master the mound with this c.1907 Christy Mathewson statue. Modeled in chalkware, this magnificent creation stands 22" tall on a 9-1/2 x 7" base. Though not officially designated as a Mathewson rendering, there's no mistaking the resemblance to "Big Six", who was one the greatest pitchers of the "Dead Ball" era and remains tied for third all-time in wins with 373. Given the age and composition of this antique icon, it presents remarkably well, with light to moderate wear. The most significant affliction is located on the left shin, in the form of a 1/4 x 1/2" chip. An age appropriate patina is recognized and there are small paint chips at scattered points, along with a paint scratch on the left forearm. The back of the 1-1/2" high base is impressed with "Copyright 1907, The American Co., Philadelphia, PA." and the number "501". A single letter "B" is impressed on the pillar behind the figure, which appears to be a tree stump, and there are two unmarked identification stickers affixed to the base, with one on the top and the other on the underside. All in all this stately piece of baseball artwork is very appealing, with a commanding presence.
