A decade after bringing Dorothy and Toto into the world, prolific author L. Frank Baum wrote an anthology/how-to book about public speaking that he initially called the
Children's Speaker, that was ultimately published as L. Frank Baum's Juvenile Speaker, and that was later renamed Baum's Own Book for Children. Here, on November 9, 1909, Baum asks permission of his main publisher, Bobbs-Merrill Company, to reprint excerpts from past works: "Gentleman: I am getting out a little book to be called a 'Children's Speaker,' which the Reilly & Britton Co. is to publish. I would like to include in it a few selections from some of my books published by you, if you will kindly give me permission to do so. You may be certain I will use no material in any way to conflict with the sale of the books; indeed, I do not think any extracts would be recognized by the general public. And, if you care to have me do so, I will publish a card saying these extracts are 'by kind permission of the Bobbs-Merrill Co.'" The 8-1/4" x 10-1/2" TLS features Baum's Chicago letterhead and his black-fountain-pen "9" signature. VG-EX condition. Full LOA from JSA.
