Description

It came down to the wire for Bobby Wine with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969. After eight seasons as a good glove, weak hitting shortstop with the "Fightn' Phils", Wine was shipped north to Montreal one day before the regular season started, as compensation for ace hurler Larry Jackson, who retired rather than reporting to the expansion Expos. Recall Wine's waning days as a Phillies player, with this 1969 Philadelphia Phillies game used jersey. A pinstriped home flannel type, this classically styled jersey is from the last year of its design type, which saw two decades of service in the "City of Brotherly Love".

Wine's name is stitched on a label inside the collar and a size "40" Wilson factory label is located on the front left tail, with "1969 Set 1" stitched in black directly below. Red chain-stitched patches adorn the front in the form of team lettering with stars dotting the letter "i", and on the back with a gargantuan number "7", that would have been visible from any seat in venerable Connie Mack Stadium. The accompanying LOA attributes the wear on the 7 patch to the straps from the chest protector of back-up catcher Vic Roznovsky, who inherited the jersey shortly after Wine's departure from Philadelphia. The LOA also suggests this jersey was later employed by the Phillies AA Reading affiliate in 1970.

Moderate signs of authentic use and wear are noted, included sweat stains under the armpits, compromised stitching along several seam sections and multiple small holes on the back number 7 patch. The LOA also notes the absence of the 1969 MLB 100th Anniversary patch from the left sleeve, likely removed when the jersey was re-purposed for the 1970 Reading season. Wine is seen in the 1969 Phillies Spring Training color photo, and he is wearing a pinstriped jersey consistent with the one offered here. The accompanying LOA from Phil Wood states "This jersey is unquestionably authentic, and a nice remnant of Connie Mack Stadium".
