Description

All the admirable qualities that made Eleanor Roosevelt a paragon of humanitarianism are on full display here. The former First Lady seeks to donate all proceeds from the sale of her 1962 Book of Common Sense Etiquette. Roosevelt's blue-ink signature exhibits "9" strength. The missive appears on a 6-1/2" x 10-1/4" sheet of personal "Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt" stationery with heavy filing wear along the top edge. Otherwise, condition is EX. The text reads, "My understanding is that you are paying direct to me, through my agent, Miss Nannine Joseph, the initial payment of $5000.00 against the royalties on the Etiquette book. As royalties accure [sic], please pay one-half direct to the American Association for the United Nations, 345 East 46th Street, New York City, and the rest to me through my agent who has agreed to waive her commission on the payment to the AAUN and contribute it also. This is to continue during my life time, and thereafter all royalties are to be divided equally between the AAUN and the Eleanor Roosevelt Cancer Institute in Denver, Colorado. Reports of all payments are to be sent as usual to Miss Joseph, but in the event that I pre-decease her, one-half of her rugular [sic] commission is still to be paid to her." Full LOA from JSA.
