George “Hooks” Wiltse was a pitcher on the 1905 New York Giants World Championship team, going 15-6 with a 2.47 ERA. This early success did not hold up as Wiltse had arm troubles after the 1912 season, and after one unproductive year with the Brooklyn club of the Federal League, Hooks hung up his spikes. Wiltse ended his career with 139 up and 90 down. Presented are two tremendous relics for this onetime champion, a 1905-09 Carl Horner cabinet photograph and a signed 1925 NY Yankees payroll check. The Carl Horner cabinet, measuring 5-1/2 x 7”, displays an image of Wiltse in his NY Giants uniform leaning on his bat (VG/VG-EX). There is corner wear and light edge wear, while the back has mild water staining and Wiltse career information written in pencil. The second item is a 1925 Yankees payroll check from the one year that Wiltse coached for the New York Yankees. The check is signed on the front by HOFer Ed Barrow (d.1953, “7”), team owner Jacob Ruppert (d.1939, “7”) and Wiltse (d.1959), who signed the back of the payroll check George Wiltse (“7”). These are a terrific pair of vintage New York and Hooks Wiltse collectibles. COA from James Spence Authentications.
