"Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. They formed the crest of the South Bend cyclone before which another fighting Army team was swept over the precipice at the Polo Grounds this afternoon as 55,000 spectators peered down upon the bewildering panorama spread out upon the green plain below." This quote from the legendary Grantland Rice, who dubbed the 1924 Notre Dame backfield as The Four Horsemen, epitomizes the mystique and power these Notre Dame greats displayed under the tutelage of Knute Rockne. Pictured atop their stallions, this ever-elusive original 8x10 photo has been signed by all four College Football Hall of Famers. Personalized to George, the photo features black ink signatures from Layden (d.1973, strength "5", clarity "7") and Miller (d.1979, "5") as well as blue ink signatures from Crowley (d.1986, "7") and Stuhldreher (d.1965, "8"). Printed by the Bagby Photo Company of South Bend, the reverse captions the photo and features a company stamp. Considering the glossy finish, the photo has survived well, displaying only varying degrees of edge wear including some light water marks on the bottom edge. A likely once-in-a-lifetime caliber photograph simply waiting to bring any Notre Dame collection that much closer to Touchdown Jesus. COA from James Spence Authentications.
