In this celebrity-oriented media circus that society has become, it is almost unfathomable to speculate how the exploits of Ty Cobb would be handled. Cobb was, well Cobb; there was something about his demeanor that had that dark, back alley mystery, yet under the magnifying glass of today’s media, Cobb probably would have been crucified. Noted journalist Jimmy Cannon said it best, “He (Cobb) was the strangest of all our national sports idols. But not even his disagreeable character could destroy the image of his greatness as a ballplayer. Ty Cobb was the best. That seemed to be all he wanted.” Presented is an attractive Reach Official American League Ban Johnson Baseball signed on the side panel by the late, great Ty Cobb (d.1961). The black ink signature (“5”) was scripted on the panel left of the official logo and displays all of the characteristics of a vintage Cobb moniker. The baseball is very clean and only slightly off-white with a small toning spot on the side opposite the signature, grading (“7-8”). The stampings on this sphere are in high grade with the blue ink still bold and clear on the ball. COA from James Spence Authentications.
