Thirty years before his near unanimous election into baseball immortality, Calvin Ripken Jr. was just a two-sport star for the Aberdeen Eagles. Upon his graduation from high school, the Baltimore Orioles drafted the fledgling “Iron Man” with a determined work ethic in the second round. Although he was raised under the tutelage of the “Oriole Way”, few could imagine the impact that Ripken would eventually have on the game of baseball or its history. This 1977 Cal Ripken Jr. high school yearbook from his junior year is a remarkable glimpse into the early life of this Baltimore hero. Throughout this 197-page (NM) yearbook are numerous Ripken photographs, (13) signatures from Ripken, his Orioles teammates, umpires for ”2,131” and in-depth detailed memories from his closest confidants. Ripken signed the yearbook five times, once on the cover (“8”) and the four other instances in which he is depicted (two baseball, soccer, class photo) with each autograph grading a (“10”). Other signatures include Players: B. Anderson (“9”), J. Carter, Hendricks (d.2005, “9”), Mussina (“8”, 2,131 inscription), Palmeiro (“9”), B. Robinson (“9”); Umpires: A. Clark (“10”), and Kosc (“10”). In the true spirit of the yearbook, lengthy heartfelt inscriptions about Ripken passing Gehrig’s consecutive games streak are crafted by Anderson, B. Robinson, Clark and Kosc. The signatures in this astounding yearbook come with a COA from James Spence Authentications.
