During the early 1970s, as football began to overtake baseball as America’s favorite spectator sport, attendance started slipping in baseball towns all across the country. Although the Oakland Athletics were the defending World Series Champions, their attendance was slipping, so the ever-present showman owner Charles O. Finley decided that using a bright orange baseball might help increase the game’s appeal. Presented is a pair of vintage Official League deBeer baseballs commissioned by Finley in the early 1970s. The baseballs are clean and blemish free and feature the blue ink signatures of two of the Athletics best players, Reggie Jackson (“7”) and Jim “Catfish” Hunter (d.1999, “8”). Both the Hall of Famers signed their baseball on the sweet spot. COA from James Spence Authentications.
