Since 1956, The Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio has honored professional and collegiate athletes from a variety of sports. Considered by many as one of the premier sporting banquets in the United States, legions of Hall of Famers from a myriad of major and minor sports have attended the festivities. This 1971 Columbus Touchdown Club football contains (38) signatures from numerous sporting celebrities, broadcasters such as Howard Cosell and upstart NCAA collegians. This tan-and-white Rawlings football is signed in blue ink with the autographs on the tan panels displaying mostly an (“7-8”) eye appeal while the white portion averages a (“5-6”) signature strength. Included are Baseball: Hoyt (d.1994, “8”), Powell (“9”); Football: Blanda (“8”), Dierdorf (6”), Hixson, (2) Kell, Kern, A. Manning (“9”), Marinaro (“9”), Meredith (“8”), (2) Millner (d.1976), Moorhead, Otis (“7”), Plunkett (“5”), Reaves, Schneiss, O. Simpson (“8”), Staroba, Starr (“8”), P. Sullivan, Tatum (“8”), (2) E. Wright, Da. Williams; Basketball: Auerbach (d.2006, “6”), Newell; Broadcasting: Cosell (d.1995, “8”), Heffner; Other: Ashworth, Braughton, Mauger and J. O’Brien (“4”). A handful of noted signatures have been signed twice on different panels. Additionally, some signatures are either unreadable or came from obscure, unidentifiable athletes.
