It has been ninety years since Christy Mathewson retired from the game, yet he is still setting records. In the recent March 2007 Huggins and Scott Auction, an autographed Christy Mathewson baseball set the record for a single-signed ball, eclipsing the $150,000 plateau. Presented is another tremendous and rare Christy Mathewson single-signed baseball. The presented example is signed on the side panel of this vintage ONL Heydler red-and-blue stitch ball. The black ink signature grades a (“6”) in strength and a (“5”) in clarity with the “Ch” in Christy and “M” in Mathewson exhibiting slight smudges. Mathewson’s signature is crisp and distinct as each letter was carefully formed by this graduate of Bucknell University. The ONL Heydler baseball is missing the official National League stamp, lost to time and wear, and the ball exhibits several abrasions and scuff marks. With moderate toning and abrasions that do not affect the signature, the ball grades a (“4”). The Christian Gentleman’s statistics are still among the best of all-time, racking up wins at a pace unimaginable in today’s game, but now it is the rarity and prominence of his single-signed baseballs that are turning heads. The baseball comes with a full LOA from JSA.
