During their century of torment, the Chicago Cubs have won the National League pennant seven times only to have their collective efforts prove futile in the Fall Classic. This eight-page 1929 World Series program memorializes the agony of Chicago’s northside during their battle against Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics. This program gamely documents the players from these squads while also containing a lightly pencil-marked scorecard. The inner-pages are moderately rounded and touched with water damage and thumb markings on the corners. Despite a wavy appearance, the inner pages and their player captions are vibrant and unobstructed. The tri-color cover reveals a moderate vertical crease through the body while the twine binding appears to be second generation. Also included is a 1-1/2” 1929 Cubs pin that reveals moderate surface cracking and extensive oxidization on the reverse. Detailing players such as Rogers Hornsby, KiKi Cuyler, Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx and Lefty Grove, this scarce program and pin is an excellent depiction of an earlier World Series.
