It does not take a baseball scholar to know the names of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx; these three are among the most heralded in the game. There are dozens of photographs that feature this trio but few autographed baseballs that bear their signatures. Presented is a City League baseball with twenty-six signatures including the big three. The ball is was most likely signed sometime during the 1927 spring training in Florida with three distinct teams represented the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Braves. The signatures are Sweet Spot: Eddie Moore (d.1976, 6), Koenig (d.1993, 4), Lazzeri (d.1946, 5); East Panel: Gehrig (d.1941, 6), Dugan (d.1982, 6), Fournier (d.1973, 4), Ruth (d.1948, 7), S.L. Cannon; West Panel: Collins (d.1951, 6), Metzler (d.1973, 7), Poole (d.1975, 6), Pate (d.1948, 7); North Panel: Walberg (d.1978, 4), Mogridge (d.1962, 5), Foxx (d.1967, 6), Eddie Brown (d.1956, 5), Cochrane (d.1962, 5), Henry Johnson (d.1982, 5); South Panel: Pate (d.1948, 6), Muesel (d.1977, 7), Wheat (d.1972, 6), Gautreau (d.1970, 4), Hale (d.1974, 5) with Bengough (d.1968, 7) and Combs (d.1976, 6) on the reverse sweet spot. The unofficial ball is slightly off-white and displays very nicely on all panels although the Ruth and Gehrig panel may draw the most interest. This fantastic relic from the year that the Bambino set the homerun bar at sixty combines beauty and star power to dazzle all viewers. COA from James Spence Authentications.
